RECORDING: February 14, 2024 Office Hours Call
Where we talked about the leader within. How are you showing up as a leader?
Thanks to everyone who joined our February Office Hours call.
So much of the leadership journey is figuring out how you want to show up as a leader. The truth is, there's no one right way to be a leader. It's a process of getting clear about how you want to lead, where you want to lead, and what suits you best.
The posture of "leader within" was a core theme of our call, where we covered questions including:
Is it a toxic team, teammate, or just bad team habits?
What team habits should I have my team focus on as we plan for and execute an event?
What criteria should my team consider when choosing an event location?
How do you off-ramp a high-performing team member while keeping best practices (and the relationship) intact?
How do you know when to step in and be a voice for change?
These monthly calls are part of a paid subscription to Better Team Habits.
If you’re not a paid subscriber yet, I encourage you to upgrade your subscription and join us for our next Office Hours call on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. PST.
Session Highlights
[02:25] Is it a toxic team, teammate, or just bad team habits?
If you think about the bell curve of human experience and behavior, more often than not, we live somewhere in the middle 80% where we're doing the best we can — between 10% toxicity and 10% sainthood. If you think your team or a teammate is toxic, you might first want to consider what organizational workways or team habits are in place that are incentivizing people to behave this way.
[10:15] What team habits should I have my team focus on as we plan for and execute an event?
For the purposes of Jeremie's situation and circumstances, we focused on three phases1 of execution:
Pre-Event Planning: Communication, Planning, Belonging
Event Implementation: Decision-Making, Collaboration
Post-Event After Care: Goal-Setting & Prioritization, Communication, Collaboration
[17:31] What criteria should my team consider when choosing an event location?
Finding the right location is a delicate balance between energetic and logistical options:
Energetic: The feel of the place (physical location or descriptive language), the level and quality of communication from location staff, and a clear understanding from all involved of the purpose and mission of the event
Logistical: Access to great food, a range of hotel options, and accessibility to transportation options
[31:51] How do you off-ramp a high-performing team member while keeping best practices (and the relationship) intact?
For shorter-term engagements like this one, be abundantly clear at the beginning. Making the obvious explicit (MTOE) at the start of the working relationship can help minimize bumps down the road. And remember, every team shift restarts the Tuckman cycle of team development, so be sure to take time to do an after-action review, capture the learnings and best practices you picked up along the way, and apply them to your next project.
[42:47] How do you know when to step in and be a voice for change?
As a leader, you will be called to be the voice of leadership on any number of topics, but you get to decide what gets your time, energy, attention, and voice. I shared 4 things I take into consideration when making such choices.
