Thank you to everyone who joined our March Leadership Strategy Session! This month we explored the concept of drift arc — the natural lag between the setting of a new destination and when the team actually aligns and moves toward it.
Understanding this lag is essential for effective leadership. Teams need time to process changes in direction, and your role as a leader is to guide this transition while maintaining momentum. As Charlie summarized in his closing remarks,
“The more you share vision and cultivate trust, the less likely you are to drift, or the more likely to see that what you’ve coded as drift is actually your team finding the right path to achieve the real objectives. Things going a different way doesn’t mean they went the wrong way, but it's your job as the leader to make that coherent so that people can embrace the wins and incorporate the learnings.”
Some of the key takeaways from this month’s session:
Understanding the Drift Arc — Why changing course in larger organizations creates a natural lag time, and how leaders can plan for this inevitable adjustment period.
Identifying the Right Economic Customers — Strategies for effective fundraising by focusing on those who directly benefit from your initiatives rather than distant stakeholders.
Managing Multiple Layers of Change — How to identify your “one number on the wall” to maintain focus amid multiple change initiatives, and why you must explicitly communicate what projects are being dropped.
Creating Effective Training Plans — The crucial difference between telling, teaching, and training when preparing for leadership transitions.
Rebuilding Trust After Restructuring — How executive teams can acknowledge mistakes and rebuild functional trust with teams after difficult organizational changes.
Our next Leadership Strategy Session will be on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. PT. (Details coming soon)
