Thanks to everyone who joined our July Office Hours call last week, where the conversations centered around the unnecessary friction that occurs when expectations are not communicated. As I've said many times:
Make the obvious explicit because when you do, you realize it wasn't so obvious.
Have you made your expectations for the quarter ahead clear to your team? Even if you are planning for a lighter Q3 due to vacations, summer schedules, etc., make sure to share (and align on) your OKPs with your team. The longer you go without a recalibration (which is what the OKP process is), the more your team will drift.
This month we discussed:
Avoiding strategic drift by communicating quarterly objectives
Creating systems that work for the team as a whole vs. individual preferences
Different leadership postures and how they serve you and your team
Making “everyone is a leader” an explicit cultural value
Shifting expectations during a shift into a management role
Crisco watermelons and broken printers are everyone's responsibility
Maintaining core practices without overcommitting during high-intensity periods
Realigning personal OKPs to work with a partner or team
These monthly calls are part of a premium subscription to Better Team Habits.
If you're not a premium subscriber yet, you can upgrade your subscription and join us for our next Office Hours call on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. PDT.
Session Highlights
[02:43] The importance of communicating quarterly objectives to your team, especially in lighter quarters (like Q3), to avoid strategic drift
[09:37] Creating systems that work for the team as a whole vs. individual preferences
[17:10] Different leadership postures and how they serve you and your team
One critical flaw with a servant leadership mindset is that sometimes, we forget that the leader must also be the customer in some scenarios. We also forget that sometimes the best way to serve your team is not to ask them what they need but to present a frame that shows them what they may not know they need.
[23:10] Making “everyone is a leader” an explicit cultural value
